The Extensible Markup Language (XML) module introduces various concepts related XML schemas, Extensible Style Sheet Language Transformations (XSLT), and XPath the students. In addition, this module explains how to create well-formed and valid XM documents. Finally, it discusses the methods to format XML documents by using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and XSLT.

Rationale

Data interchange is essential to carry out business transactions. The challenge in carry out data interchange lies in establishing standard interfaces among various enterprises This is because enterprises store data in disparate formats. XML provides a structure storing data in text format, which can be used as a standard format or protocol for dat interchange. It plays an extended role as a very robust data interchange format.

XML allows creation of custom markup tags, thereby providing flexibility to define structure of content and also describe the content. In addition, XML can be used to st data in a device-independent format and to extract and present data in different forma using style sheets.

XML is fast emerging as a standard technology to describe and define documents. T flexibility provided by XML has enabled chemical, cellular, mobile, and other indus to describe and define content according to their requirements
